The seal material PE-UHMW is an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, which can, due to its extremely high molecular weight, only be processed by pressing and extrusion to seals and/or construction parts.
PE-UHMW can be characterized by the following properties:
- very good wear and abrasion resistance also with abrasive substances
- good chemical resistance
- low coefficient of friction and thus good anti-friction behaviour
- outstanding dimensional stability and thus suitable for high pressures
- low moisture absorption
- high impact strength also at low temperatures
- good electrical isolation properties
- very well suitable for using in water applications
- usable in the food and pharmaceutical industry
- permanent service temperatures to max. + 100°C
- very small gas permeability
In the sealing technology the material PE-UHMW is often used for pistons and rod seals like spring-energized seals or memory packings.
Based on PE-UHMW and PTFE tailor-made compounds are developed for special applications, e.g. for reducing the friction and optimizing the sliding properties of dynamic seals. |
